When most of us think about cork, the place we imagine it isn’t the floor. Instead, we think about bulletin boards and wine bottles. However, cork is an amazing-feeling, environmentally friendly flooring option that’s good for our bodies. Its soft, warm texture reduces stress on joints and just feels good.

Cork is great for people who have joint problems and is quiet to walk on in any kind of footwear. Cook flooring is made from the bark of the cork oak - the same place that wine corks come from. However, unlike porous cork, the material used for flooring has been treated and sealed so that it doesn’t get dirty as easily and is resistant to wear.

Cork is extremely sustainable as a building material - no trees are killed in its production. Ancient cork oaks continue to produce layers of cork bark, which are harvested once every nine years. The bark is cut from the outside of the tree in sheets, but the tree itself is not hurt by this process. Once its bark has been carefully harvested, the tree keeps on growing the same way, producing more cork!

Conventional cork installations can be tricky; involving glues and other annoying processes, the good news is that there is now another option. Cork flooring that uses a locking system can simply snap into place, making installation quick and easy.

Did you know that you only need two organic cleaning products in order for you to have a clean abode? Well, you read that right. Only two products and two steps are needed for your home to be clean and sparkling. You need only to go to a specific room in your house. And if you guessed that it’s the kitchen, well, you’re right! But you may ask; where exactly in the kitchen?

The first place you should check is your cupboard. If you have vinegar there - the white, distilled kind or even cider vinegar - then you are in luck. Vinegar is a known cleaning agent that not only neutralizes unpleasant odors but it also disinfects. You can simply add one part water to one part vinegar. Put it in a spray container or just any other kind. Spray or wipe on tiles, countertops, bathroom floors, sinks and even on toilet bowls. Don’t worry; your house won’t stink to the highest heavens after you clean your house using vinegar and water. After the solution dries out, any kind of smell would be gone in a flash and even you won’t believe it for yourself. Just a note of reminder though - don’t use vinegar on marble tiles or any kind of marble surfaces. Vinegar plus marble is not a very good idea.

Another tried and tested natural cleaning product that can be found in your own home is baking soda. Baking soda is a very useful cleaning agent that can be used as a natural scrub to eradicate slimy surfaces. It’s very much like a facial scrub but instead of a face, it cleans tiles and other surfaces. Baking soda on your face might not be a very good idea though. Need more proof? Well, baking soda can improve the appearance of yellowish teeth. So if it can make teeth white, tiles are a no-brainer for this all purpose cleaner. But baking soda isn’t just a surface cleaner, it’s also a deodorizer. Open a box of baking soda, leave it on a shelf in your refrigerator, and you will not have a problem with unpleasing odors every time you open your fridge. Leave an opened box or can of baking soda in the bathroom, bedroom or other places that you want to deodorize. Now that’s great, isn’t it?

Well, these are just some of the green cleaning products found in your very own home, just lying around, waiting for you to notice them. If you are naturally curious, then maybe in your spare time, you can tinker around your kitchen and, who knows, maybe you’ll discover a use for peanut butter as a cleaning aid. Just remember that when trying things out for the first time, make sure that you test on a small surface first before proceeding to cleaning up larger spaces.

Never fear. Here are some tips to get you started in the right direction.

You’re not required to keep everything you get at your baby shower-So your favorite cousin bought you a basinet filled with diapers and baby wipes. Great! Store the diapers and baby wipes-you’ll never get enough of those-and then find the nearest store that sells the same basinet and trade it in for something you actually need, like blankets and baby clothes. The same goes for colors. When you’re trying to create a pink nursery for a little girl, the last thing you want is a safari striped Diaper Genie. So go ahead and exchange it for the one you want. After all, this is about you and your baby. Not about everybody who bought you stuff.

Think safety first-When you think of protecting your baby you’re probably thinking about rails on the crib and the changing table, but safety is also about keeping your baby clean and free from germs and dirt. Start with a “No Shoes” rule for the baby’s room and you’ll find that it remains much cleaner for lots longer than if you didn’t have the rule. And don’t forget to purchase a high quality area rug for the baby’s play area. Area rugs come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and yarns, so you can choose the perfect one for your nursery. Many area rugs, especially cotton area rugs, can be washed or taken to the cleaners when necessary so you’ll always have a safe and clean place for baby to lay and to play during the day-this is also a great idea in other areas of the house but you can also use blankets for this.

Think playful-Stop trying to make the baby’s room perfect and don’t try to be one of those high class aficionados. It’s a child’s room so make it look like it. Bright or pastel colors, fun objects and shapes are perfect for children. A wine and roses motif is probably better suited for your dining room.

When you’re decorating your nursery, let it be an experience to remember by making it just the way baby likes it: playful and creative.

How Often Should Bed Linen Be Changed- Tips To Keep Your Bedding Fresh

I get questions from my customers about how to best take care of their bed linens. You may have been wondering about this too. How often should be linen be changed to maintain your linens for years of use. You might also wonder how often to change linen if you have an allergy sufferer in your home.

Let’s get into then-

How often bed linens should be changed depends on several different things. Every person sheds skin every day and every night, resulting in bits of dead skin to be on bed linens after a night’s sleep. It would be very nice to have bed linen changed daily for completely freshness, but for most people this is impractical and virtually impossible with a busy daily schedule. Probably the only people who have a housekeeping staff can enjoy the luxury of fresh sheets and pillowcases being replaced daily.

In general, a good homemaker changes bed linens at least once per week. However, if experiencing night sweats or hot flashes, it may be best to change them more frequently. Assuming that the people who sleep in the bed shower before bedtime, that they do not eat or drink in bed and cause spills, or that the bed linen becomes dirty more quickly for any other reason, weekly linen changes are normally sufficient.

Some people prefer to change their bed linen twice weekly to ensure their sheets always feel fresh and snuggly. This can be very useful during the warmer months, especially if you keep your home warmer to save energy. In winter, these same people often prefer to allow the sheets to stay on the bed a few more days since body perspiration is less likely.

Anyone who has allergies should change their bed linen as often as possible. Dust mites and other allergens collect on bed linen and can aggravate the allergies causing runny noses, stuffed sinuses, and other problems that last all day long.

In fact, some people with the most severe allergies are forced to change bed linens each day to prevent suffering after sleeping on day-old bed linens.

So, the answer to the question of how often should bed linens be changed really depends on your lifestyle, your health, and your personal preferences.

However, you should never leave bed linen on the bed longer than one week. It’s usually best to own at least 3 sets of bed linens. One for the bed…one in the linen closet and one in the laundry.

The History of Water Gardens

Take any major historical civilization, any major human development such as the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, or even the present-day concerns for the environment and conservation, and examine their effect on the art of garden design at the time - and what do you see as the major focal point in the center of the resulting gardens? Water.

The city states that sprang up over 5,000 years ago in the Near East around the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, and also, of course, around the Nile in Egypt, probably gave rise to the art and practice of horticulture as we know it, for growing food and for social amenity value. Water was naturally important in these baking hot areas for the irrigation of crops, but here the ruling classes, which were synonymous with the high priests of the current religions, had the luxury of water channeled directly into the confines of their own palace grounds for the purposes of stocking fish and plants in pools, or the watering of trees.

By the ninth century BC, with the rise of the Persian Empire, the concept of the garden had evolved into that of ‘paradise’ on earth. In the dry stone landscape that is now Iraq, small enclaves of civilization sprang up that were totally reliant upon a meager water supply that very often had to be channeled several kilometers from the base of a mountain.

By the Sassinid period of the Persian Empire in the third century AD, the garden had taken on a wholly symbolic form. The perfection of God’s creation could only be represented symbolically, and as far as gardening was concerned, the irrigation channels remained, dividing the garden into four quarters, meeting at right angles in the center: this represented the universe that was divided into four parts. A tree, and then later a fountain in the center represented the Tree of Life.

During the fourth century BC in the equally refined Greek civilization, we find another very self-conscious type of philosophical man, reflecting on his place in the universe. He felt superior to nature, and made models of his gods in his own image as he developed the art of the sculpture.

The Greeks did very little to develop the art of gardening, although certain grottoes and holy places may have been tended as natural gardens, accessible only to an elite or a cult of the resident god or oracle. The concept of the grotto would continue through Roman times, re-emerging constantly right through to the present time.
