Getting Your House Organized

Getting Your House Organized

By: Vincent Platania

In this modern world, when distant populations are connected by computers and modern communications, when we are all aware of so many possibilities, we seem to have less time and space to enjoy the abundance around us. Today it is common for both spouses work outside the home. Everyone comes home exhausted from work at the end of the day, needing to tend to children and pets, to produce a nourishing meal for the family, to exercise for the allotted time, and to maintain a marital relationship. The last thing you want to do is get your house organized, but it may be the clutter in your house that is slowing you down and helping to make you feel tired.

IF you spend significant amounts of time looking for items that have been “put in a safe place,” if you struggle to clean your house because of the clutter, if you avoid having friends over because of the mess, if you would be embarrassed for your employer to drop by your home unannounced, you are in danger of letting the clutter take over your life. It is time to take on the task of getting your house organized. When you are finished, you will discover that you have much more free time at the end of the day. Basic tasks are simplified when you know where all the tools are. Everyone is happier when homework and bills aren’t misplaced in piles of clutter. And it is amazing how quickly a house can be cleaned when it is only necessary to clean the house, instead of having to pick up the mess in the house and then clean it.

If the task seems overwhelming, if you can’t think about organizing the entire house at once, take heart and start small. Begin with an area that will make a true impact on your life from the beginning—your clothes closet. If your closet is cleared out and arranged efficiently, you will be able to spend less time finding clothes to wear when you are getting ready for work in the mornings. Because your wardrobe will be organized, you will be able to dress more quickly and attractively. And when you shut that closet door in the morning, you will know that there is a small part of your house that is neat and clean. Just knowing you have made a start will give you the motivation to clear another section, until you have finished organizing the entire house.

Spend an hour in your nearest hardware store to get some cluttered closet help. There, you will find lots of ideas for how to organize, along with supplies for adding an extra shelf or closet rod if necessary. Also, pick up some paint. One of the first things you will need to do for this project is to empty the closet of everything. This is an excellent time to wash the walls, repair or replace fixtures and shelves, and repaint.

Another source of cluttered closet help is a book on how to sort through and organize your wardrobe. All your clothes should be in view. Make a pile of clothing that you haven’t worn in two or more years. These items may not fit, they may need mended, or dry-cleaned they may be out of style, or they may be worn out. If it is an item that you would wear if it were fixed, and that goes with other items you are keeping, put it in a pile for repairs. Otherwise, give it away. If your closet is small, consider storing off-season clothing in another closet or storage container. Keep your fresh, new closet for the clothing you actually will wear now.

At this point, you may sort in any way you want—by color, by type of clothing (i.e., pants, blouses, and jackets), or by style (i.e., professional, casual, or dressy). This is a good time to utilize some of the many new closet organizers available now. You may want to invest in hangers for belts and scarves, special pants hangers or suit hangers.

Everything You Need To Know When Selecting A Home Safe

Everything You Need To Know When Selecting A Home Safe

By: Steve Strong

Safes come in all different shapes and sizes and with a host of different security features. Depending on where you want your safe for will influence what type of safe you will require. For the home you will probably be looking for a small scale security safe. The safes can be split into two categories; these are burglary resistant and fire resistant.

Focusing on the burglary resistant safes first these will normally include security and key cabinets. The security safes have different ratings depending on the capacity, the low end range from around 2000 dollars through to 75000 dollars in insurance ratings. This is worked on the capacity of cash and valuables, so for example a low end 2000 dollar insurance rated safe will be insured for the value of 2000 dollars in cash or 40000 in valuables, this will vary depending on the type you choose. The safes will usually be fitted with either a key or electronic combination and the fixing would be to the wall or the floor. Within this range there are many options to satisfy your needs, these will range from laptop security safes to under floor safes.

A very common form of burglary is for the intruder to enter the premises or the house and steal car keys; usually the theft of the vehicle is to order. Many people make this easy for the intruder by having their keys near to the door. It is possible today to buy a key safe or cabinet that can hold your keys in a secure unit that will make the theft of your car keys harder for any intruder. It is also possible to keep your keys inside your security safe to provide additional security. Often the security safes are not fireproof and would not be suitable for storage of important paper documentation. There are many fireproof safes now on the market which are suitable not only for documents but also for data storage.

Data storage safes are common place in business where many organizations need to keep important files secure. Fireproof safes offer a range of protection from 1 hour to 2 hours fire resistance. The safes can protect important data items such as cds, dvds, dat tapes and optical disks. The other fireproof safes are for document storage again depending on the type that you buy the resistance can range anywhere from thirty minutes up to four hours. The smaller models are suitable for home use and start in price at around 75 dollars, making this a very cost effective solution to protect your valuable documents.

When choosing your safe you can have different styles of lock, these include key, electronic and combination locks. On the lower end safes you will most likely have either a key or electronic lock, if you have difficulty in remembering number sequences then it would be advised to choose the key lock over the electronic. Some of the high end safes will have a combination lock that will be set to turns and numbers; these are not normally found on the lower end safes made for the home environment.

Coming Up With Small Bathroom Designs

Author: Samuel Zipursky

Well I’m sure you have all thought about upgrading your home bathroom haven’t you? Of course you have unless you designed your house from the start and everything was built custom for you.

Most of us have not been that fortunate and we now need to work with the bathroom that came with our home in the first place. Don’t give up hope because in this brief article I will give you some tips and tricks on things to consider when designing your home bathroom.

One of the first steps that you need to do before you even think about paying someone or doing the upgrade yourself is researching and setting some design goals. These will outline what it is that you want to achieve. The best place to do research on finding bathroom designs and photos that you like is on the internet or in magazines and other printed materials like books.

When you consider these small bathroom designs just compare yourself to the pros and try to copy them. You don’t need to invent the wheel from scratch. I would clip out the best bathroom design photos that you find and then try and follow what you see in your own renovation.

Another thing you are going to want to set up from the beginning of this is clear goals for the project. Do you want to change the colors to brighten the room up? Install a new bathtub or sink? Or do you want to fully gut the place and enlarge your bathroom area? These are key questions to ask so you have a clear design goal and end outcome in mind.

Also you should be setting up and defining a budget before you start the project. If you don’t do this you could run the risk of the project costing way more then you had originally hoped for and no one likes to go broke over a bathroom.

So do yourself a favor and set a budget, and then stick to it. We all know that like any home improvement project if you are not careful the price can end up being a lot more then you had originally planned out.

Small bathroom designs can be fun or can be a nightmare depending on the strategy and common sense you apply to the design process. If you follow some simple steps including some of the tips I’ve outlined in this brief piece you should be well on your way to having successful small bathroom designs in your homes.

Venetian Blind Tips for Homebuyers

Windows & blinds, ProvenceImage by Piero Sierra via FlickrVenetian Blind Tips for Homebuyers

Author: Kevin Knight

Venetian blinds are perhaps the most popular type of blinds found in homes today. When buying a home you will want to take into consideration what type of material would work well for venetian blinds in your new home, how many and what size of venetian blinds you may need, and whether you may want to consider custom made venetian blinds. The blinds will play a big role in your new home, they will help to create a style in each room and to provide privacy and a background until formal curtains and other window treatments can be acquired.

Assess the Situation

The first thing you want to consider when purchasing your new home is what kind of condition the current blinds are in. If there are already venetian blinds in the home you are going to purchase, then it may not be necessary to purchase new ones. However, due to toxins and chemicals that may be on previously owned venetian blinds that you may not be aware of, it is recommended that you purchase new venetian blinds, or at least perform a thorough cleaning on the preexisting ones.

If you decide to purchase new venetian blinds, you will need to take note of how many blinds you will need and what size they will need to be. Measuring the windows yourself can give you an approximate idea of size, but you may want to bring in a professional to ensure you get the best fit possible for the venetian blinds in your new home.

Materials and Color

Venetian blinds are versatile and can be found in a variety of colors and materials. The most commonly seen venetian blinds are made from vinyl or metal and come in either white or cream. You are definitely not limited to this, but it is the norm. Venetian blinds can also be made from wood and in some cases fabric as well, and can be ordered in a various colors.

Homebuyers usually like to start fresh with a new home and create a unique style all their own. If you want to create a new style in your home, you will want to consider what type of window treatments you will be using in addition to your venetian blinds. For simple plain color panels or sheers going with a colored blind may create a more dramatic effect, while going with an intricately patterned or bold color window treatment may call for a plain metal neutral colored venetian blind. Once you have determined what size, how many, and what color and material you want in a venetian blind you are ready to purchase some.

Custom Made or Not?

While custom made venetian blinds can be more expensive, they are also going to last longer. Custom made venetian blinds are made to order and can be designed using any color or material that you like. If you want okra colored fabric venetian blinds then they can be custom made to fit any window of your new home. Custom made blinds also tend to be made of higher quality material than the cheaper ones found in retail stores.

Retail bought venetian blinds can last for quite some time as well, they are inexpensive and can be bought in various sizes to fit the different windows in your new home. Venetian blinds found at retail stores normally come in your choice of 2-3 colors and either vinyl or metal materials. If you are not looking to make a unique statement with your venetian blinds, and if your home has fairly regular shaped windows, then retail venetian blinds may be perfect for you.

Another factor to consider is whether the windows are easy to reaching your new home. If you will have a hard time reaching the blind controls on the windows, then custom made remote control venetian blinds may be an option for you. Whether to purchase custom made blinds or not is a decision that must be made by each individual homebuyer.

Venetian blinds can provide sleek sophistication in the rooms of any home. When buying a home it is important to consider all aspects of the venetian blinds that you would like to purchase before making a decision. As one of the basics in your new home, your venetian blinds can be a reflection of your style or just a simple backdrop that provide you with privacy and light control.

Bar Stool Options in the Kitchen Area

Two bar stool in front of a kitchen counterImage via WikipediaAuthor: Leo Collins

Using a barstool set in the kitchen is a great way to save space and incorporate the use of available countertop space and breakfast bar usage.

The Heart of the Home

The kitchen is generally considered the heart of the home. The meals are prepared in the midst of talking and laughing and fun times socialising with family and friends. You can carry on conversations while sipping on a cup of tea or coffee, doing homework with children, and having heart-to-heart conversations. Visiting of all types can be enjoyed over a steaming cup of hot chocolate. All these occasions and more make an inviting and warm family kitchen the heart of the home.
