Before hiring a contractor to install different kitchen cabinets consider doing the job yourself. Do-it-yourself installation is made easy with modular kitchen cabinets available by many sources. Deciding on doing this can save you time and money.

As like other projects you will need to plan. It is very important to measure the cabinets that you already have installed. Measuring them a few times each will make sure you have the correct dimensions. You may prefer to use the same pattern that the cabinets are placed. You could also choose to make a new layout for the cabinets. It all depends on how much time you would like to spend doing the project and also your experience.

When you have the cabinet layouts planned, you want to make a list of what tools and materials you will need. The most common important items are screws which will hold the cabinets in the wall, and shims that are used to level the cabinets. You will want to have everything you will need before starting.

Removing the old cabinets is the first step towards installing the new. Usually at the back of the cabinets you will find screws or nails holding them into the wall. It is easier to work if you remove everything from inside the cabinets first. You may want to find someone who can help you.

Once the old cabinets are off, you can start assembling the new ones.

Many modular cabinets will come with instructions somewhat like what you would find when putting together a bookcase. It is better to leave the doors off of the cabinets during this part of assembling. The cabinets should be put together evenly and securely as possible.

If you can, you should install the upper cabinets first. This way you will not have to work over the lower cabinets. A stud finder will come in handy. Usually studs are 16 to 24 inches apart. You will need to locate them and make sure you know where they are. You could tap a nail into the areas since you will not see it once the cabinets are installed.

There are two common ways to installing kitchen cabinets. One way is with having a partner assist you. You will need to use a support jack such as a piece of scrap wood screwed into the wall. You will need the other persons help by holding the cabinets while you screw them into place. The other option when installing is known as the French Cleat method. When doing this, you screw a support or cleat to the areas where the cabinets will be placed.

Lower cabinets can easily be set into place after the studs are located. Make sure they fit correctly before screwing them into place.
