What is Wrought Iron?
By Amanda Taylor

Wrought iron, a term that literally means iron that has been made into a shape, is a common material used for home decorating. There are many home dcor items made from wrought iron for indoor and outdoor decoration and function.

But what exactly is wrought iron? The technical definition for wrought iron is: pure commercial iron that is worked into a finished product. The truth is very few products today that are made of “wrought iron” actually meet this definition. Most wrought iron home dcor items today are made of a combination of iron with a small amount of carbon, or mild steel as it is called. Mild steel possesses the same qualities as true wrought iron. It can be easily shaped and formed, and it has the same rich ornamental color and look. Mild steel is also widely available, making it relatively inexpensive.

The use of wrought iron is not a new concept. Wrought iron has been used for centuries because of its durable and decorative nature. From protecting windows and doors to adorning famous castles and Victorian homes, wrought iron has truly served a multitude of purposes. The earliest use of wrought iron dates back to the thirteenth century when it was used for outdoor fences and wrought iron railings. Decorative wrought iron items began to flourish in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for a variety of home accessories.

Today, wrought iron is still a common decorating material for homes of all shapes, sizes and styles. Wrought iron is popular for outdoor use for traditional items including fences, gates, and stairway rails as well as for smaller details including gate latches and hinges. It is popular for indoor use as well, for items including wall dcor, candle holders, lamps, chandeliers, fireplace accessories, and a variety of furniture pieces. Wrought iron will always have a place in the world of home decorating, regardless of the technicalities of its true definition.
