Tip1: There are numerous government departments you have to get through before the plans for your dream home can be approved. You need these approvals before you can start work on-site. Accept that this process is very structured, and that the approvals take time. Be mentally prepared allow yourself more time so that you do not get unduly frustrated.
Tip 2: Keep a scrapbook of designs, elements and objects that you like and dislike. Study them so you d be able to understand and articulate your needs and wants clearly for example, is it the color or the design that you like? Compile similar cut-outs from magazines or brochures to convey to the architects and contractors a general idea of your favorite style. This helps them come up with proposals to which you would be more likely to give the go-ahead, and makes the process much smoother.
Tip 3: Always keep track of costs. While this may seem obvious, be mindful that a flippant decision that seems perfectly logical at one time may lead to cost implications eventually. Ask before you commit to anything, as even little things can add up to a hefty bill. It s good to keep a spreadsheet of the original cost and update it periodically during renovation. That way, you ll have a better grasp of the costs as the renovation progresses. One cost-saving idea is to combine built-ins with off-the-shelf furniture for example, buying ready-made shelves, measuring them and asking the contractor to make allowances when renovating the walls to slot in the shelves.
