If house plants could talk many would scream - “Stop The Water.”
One of the Top 3 or 4 reasons houseplants die comes from too much
water.
Over watering is one part of the problem, however, there is
another side pertaining to houseplant watering and that is - Not
Watering Thoroughly.
When the soil becomes water saturated it becomes easy to “pour it
on” and the soil and root ball gets or stays wet. The roots from
keeping “wet feet” may rot off leaving the soil constantly wet.
Remember these few Plant Watering Tips
- Too much water is not good for the plant
- Having a good water supply is essential
- Watering may need to be adjusted during different times of the
year
- Finally - Plant watering is an art form.
What do I mean by not watering plants thoroughly?
Backing off on watering means new attention needs to be focused
on soil moisture. Usually we think of watering weekly - how about
looking at the amount of time it takes for the soil to “dry down”
to a certain level in the pot as our “gauge for watering”.
Depending on the plant variety assume that the top 1/3 of the
soil in the pot should dry down. Moisture should be in the soil
and around the roots. Remember we are talking about moisture and
not wetness.
How do you water plants? Do you pour water into one spot or
water the plant at the edge of the pot? You should be
concentrating on watering the entire top 1/3 of the soil.
You may be able to get away with watering in one spot on smaller
size pots, but as the container size increases you will be watering
a smaller area by volume.
Water will take the path of least resistance.
On a larger pot, watering in one spot can work like a funnel. In
dry soil everything channels down into one spot. Once the soil
becomes too dry it may be difficult to ever rewet. Completely dry
soil can actually repel the water!
Your best bet in thoroughly watering plants is to use some type
of “water breaker” similar to a showerhead, to help disperse the
flow of water and to water the entire soil area and not one spot.
Sometimes you need to use more water to completely and thoroughly
water the soil. Then the excess water will need to be drained
off. You need to make sure water does not collect or puddle in
the saucer or in the bottom of the pot when the soil stays in
full contact with the water.
One way I water plants thoroughly uses a 5-gallon pale filled
with water. I totally submerge the growing pot allowing water to
completely ill and saturate the soil. Once the soil quits
bubbling as the water pushes out all the air. The plant comes out
of the bucket and draining all the excess water off.
Complete watering of plants is not limited to only house plants.
The landscape, lawns, yards and gardens need to follow the same
rules. Water plants completely!
Remember - plant watering is an art form. Learn to water
thoroughly and master this form of art of plant care. Your plants
will enjoy it much more.
