The family includes 1 large dog, 1 bossy cat, a 10 year old boy and his two parents who love animals!
They moved into the 30 year old home knowing it would need updating. As part of the interior design planning process, they took the time to think about how the home could be optimized to minimize potential damage their pets (and child) could cause, while still meeting the needs of all the members of the household.
The house needed new flooring and new paint throughout.
Up came the dated vinyl in the kitchen and back bathrooms area, the worn, dirty Berber carpeting came out of the family room and master bedrooms, all rooms were repainted.
The flooring chosen was a wood laminate by Wilsonart. The wood laminate made sense for several reasons
-color chosen to coordinate with dog and cats fur color
-wood laminate hard wearing and easy maintenance.
It doesn t scratch (pet claws), doesn t need to be re-sealed, easy vacuum/mop and damp mop so everyday and extraordinary pet stains wouldn t cause concern.
The wall paint finish had been flat, color Navajo White.
-New paint colors chosen using a low sheen paint finish that is washable. Now when the large dog nestles up against the wall, or the cat scent marks a wall corner, it is easily washed without fear or removing the paint itself.
Windows and sleeping arrangements.
The cat wanted higher up viewing points and sunny windows or doors to peer out of. The dog wanted a good view of the street in front of the house. Both needed cozy den like beds to relax in, that were placed in the rooms that the rest of the 2 legged family members spend the majority of their time.
The vertical blinds were removed from the front facing windows and replaced with bamboo shades. In the dining room, the bamboo shade remains raised halfway so the dog can peer out onto the front yard and street without damaging the window treatment.
The sliding glass doors in the family room that look out onto the back yard patio have only a window valence on them so the cat and the dog can enjoy the natural sunlight and have an unobstructed view.
The family room has a cat and dog bed side by side up against the beehive fireplace (think den like in nature) the materials are washable and hide the fur of the pets well.
There is a chenille throw draped across the back of the sofa that is an exact match to the cat s fur. The cat likes to nest on the soft throw and the owner simply needs to throw it in the wash to clean it.
The dog sleeps with her pet parents in the master bedroom on her dog bed which is covered in Cryptonite fabric. Cryptonite is stain and odor resistant, antimicrobial and is easily washed.
