Patio Design - The 3 Most Popular Furniture Styles
By David Faulkner

When deciding on a patio design, the first things you have to take into account are the basic structural elements such as flooring, walls, and roof. You may have to choose between wooden or concrete floors. You have to decide whether to use wood or metal for the roof structure, or maybe whether to have a roof at all. You can add some kind of wall, or maybe not. These are all things to think about.

However you decide to go about the construction part, your patio design will ultimately be expressed not by the floors or roof, but by the pieces of furniture and other decorations that you choose to put in the area.

In choosing furniture for patios, people usually opt for one of these three popular choices: wood, wicker, or wrought iron.

Wood is probably the most prevalent furniture style in patio design. This is because wood naturally blends well with the outdoors, and has just enough of the cozy and comfortable feel of the indoors. Choosing wooden furniture as part of your patio design could be a lot of fun as there is a wide array of wooden furniture to select from.

The only drawback to using wooden furniture in your patio design is that wood needs to be treated regularly to protect it from rain and sun. When the rains come, you would probably have to bring your wooden furniture in, or at least have covers for them.

Another increasingly popular choice in patio furniture material is the wicker. Wicker chairs are made from a natural fiber and therefore blend well with the garden. The natural fibers woven together make for very comfortable seating. Very little maintenance is required for wicker furniture.

Wrought iron furniture makes for a rather more elegant patio design. These pieces of furniture are reminiscent of 18th-century furniture styles. They are very durable and highly resistant to rust. They may look too formal for some people, but adding some throw pillows with soft floral patterns, or perhaps incorporating some fabric in the overall patio design, are enough to reduce the harshness in their appearance.

An excellent feature of wrought iron furniture is their durability and resistance to almost any kind of weather condition. Even if it rains all day, your wrought iron furniture will impressively withstand the elements.

Deciding on the kind of patio design will truly depend on your own personal taste and preferences. Just be sure to choose a patio design that you really like, and that suits the purpose that you want your area to serve.
