Traditionally, modern interiors have been thought to be cold and minimalist but today s contemporary interiors are comfortable and welcoming without being cluttered and dark. It s a style that is as equally appropriate for offices and stores as well as lofts and homes.
Generally, simplicity, subtle sophistication, texture and clean lines create and define contemporary decorating. The idea is to showcase space rather than things. By focusing on the color, space and shape-modern interiors are sleek and fresh.
- ColorNeutrals, black and white are the main colors in contemporary interiors. This palette is often brought to life with bright and bold color. Black is most often used to ground and define a modern room. While walls are usually painted in basic neutral, you can have a wonderful backdrop of bold colored accessories. For example, choose artwork painted in bold colors. You can then add throw pillows, picture frames and unique accessories to bring out the colors in the artwork.
- Lines and SpaceThe most obvious and distinctive element to contemporary interior design is LINE. It can be found in the architectural details, use of bold color blocks, high ceilings, bare windows and the geometric shapes in wall art and sculpture. The bare space on walls between pieces of furniture become just as important as the areas filled with an object. Remember as we stated earlier- less is more. The idea here is to showcase space rather than things. Each piece should stand as individual and unique.
Don t forget to take advantage of the structural elements as well. Ducts can hang from ceilings, broken bricks provide texture and exposed plumbing is perfectly acceptable as well! To draw the eye, paint these structures with bold colors or to diminish their importance, blend them in with the walls.
Contemporary furniture is also the key to creating the modern look. Smooth, clean shapes are essential for the furniture pieces. Furniture pieces should be simple and uncluttered without curves or lots of decoration. Sofas, chairs and ottomans have exposed legs. Beds and chairs usually have no skirt, trim, fringe or tassels. Accent pillows add a shot of color and texture in clean geometric shapes.
