lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium batteries are different from lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries. Lithium is the lightest of all metals and has the greatest electrochemical potential.
The problem with Lithium batteries is, if they get hot, they have a tendency to explode and start a fire.
The first work on the lithium battery started in 1912 by a man named G.N. Lewis.
In the early 1970 s the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became available.
Attempts to manufacture rechargeable lithium batteries in the eighties failed because of safety concerns. They found that occasional shorts from lithium dendrites could cause thermal run-away. When recharging a lithium battery the temperature quickly approached the melting temperature of the lithium which resulted in violent reactions.
In November 2, 2005 a company named A123Systems, developer of a new generation of Li-ion batteries, unveiled it s technology and announced that it is delivering batteries with unprecedented power, safety, and life as compared to conventional Lithium technology. A123Systems battery technology delivers up to 10X longer life, 5X power gains and dramatically faster charge time over conventional high powered battery technology.
Black & Decker is A123Systems first customer to use the Li-ion battery in cordless tools. Black & Decker is using A123Systems 36 volt Li-ion battery in the DeWalt line of cordless tools. The DeWalt line with the 36 volt Li-ion Batteries include a hammer drill, reciprocating saw, circular saw, impact wrench, rotary hammer, jigsaw, flashlight and combo kits.
