iCoil vs. Memory Foam
By Charles Harmon

If you ve read many of my articles, you know that I m very high on memory foam mattresses.

However, I often receive comments from people saying that they can t sleep on foam. Some complain of the hot, sweaty feeling they get at night and others say it just doesn t feel natural to them.

I realize that nearly 80% of the people still sleep on a mattress involving springs of some kind. It s a well known fact of the mattress industry.

There are many reasons why people choose memory foam for their sleeping comfort. A memory foam mattress conforms to your body to give support and then the temperature sensitivity softens the mattress in areas where you body is contacting it. This feature is one of the big selling points of memory foam.

We re all familiar with the picture of a hand above a memory foam mattress and the handprint still showing up on the mattress. This picture illustrates what s called slow recovery and it s what lots of people identify with memory foam.

Slow recovery is good to an extent. One obvious problem, and one that s often commented about, is that you can feel like you re rolling out of a rut when you turn over at night.

The slow recovery rate can then cause you to feel as though your falling back into the rut if your turn over before your mattress recovers.

A new sleep technology called iCoil is allowing those, who don t like foam, a chance to benefit from a more superior support than they ve been used to with their old style spring mattresses. This is especially true of those who ve been sleeping on the old bonnell spring mattresses.

An iCoil mattress has many more, smaller sized springs than traditional mattresses, therefore, the support characteristics approach that of memory foam mattresses but with one obvious advantage.

iCoil mattresses, by nature, instantly recuperate so that when you turn, at night, your mattress “follows” the movements of your body instantly. No rut to roll out of and no rut to fall back into. To most people, it feels more natural and allows them to turn at will during the night.

Because a memory foam mattress doesn t follow your body movements, some people complain of being awakened by the unusual sensation of a body mold.

The bottom line is instant recuperation may be a desirable feature that many people prefer over slow recovery.
