If you are landscaping, you may want to take help from landscaping blocks. These come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and even in a few different colors, and are meant to help you add structure and style to your landscape.
You can use landscaping blocks the way you would use landscape timbers or stones, but they are usually easier to handle and much easier to arrange into patterns and designs, because they are made with nice flat faces on them and they interlock or stack without any special care or leveling required.
If you are going to use landscaping blocks on the ground, it is always a good idea to design your structural arrangement in cooperation with gravity and the surrounding earth. If you are putting a block retaining wall, for instance, you should angle the blocks back a little with each higher course, so that they lean into the hill and not away from it, where they would eventually end up falling down. By having gravity help to encourage them toward the bank of dirt, you ensure that your wall will not fall and that it will hold the dirt in place more powerfully.
Always put the first row of landscaping blocks down into the dirt a few inched, to lock them into place. And it is a good idea to leave plenty of room for drainage of water that might build up behind them, as rain, melted snow, and irrigation water in your yard can filter down and get trapped behind the blocks. Water is heavy, and the pressure of it can break your wall if you do not give it another way to drain out. This is usually done by putting some pipes in the lower course of blocks, so that the water can slip out in between them and escape.
Use safety precautions when working with landscaping blocks, because they can be heavy, and if you do not practice safe and healthy procedures, you can end up straining a muscle or doing something worse. It is a good idea to wear safety glasses and sturdy gloves when working with blocks, and if you use any kind of binding material like cement or mortar, be sure to follow the safety instructions that come with the material, because it is possible to get bad irritation, eye injuries, skin rashes, and that sort of thing when working around cement. The dust is also hazardous, so you may need to use a filter or respirator while working with cement products.
