Many experts will tell you that laying tile is very complicated and that it takes many years of
practice to learn the necessary skills. But the truth is that you can learn how to lay tile in your
own home very easily.
There are plenty of books and online articles about installing ceramic tile. Most have diagrams or
pictures. However, the easiest way to learn how to tile a floor, countertop or any other surface is
to watch an expert at work. Now, unless you know a tile installer personally (in which case you
could ask for a discount if you do not want to lay tile yourself), you are not likely to be able to
watch someone lay tile in person.
The next best option is to watch a “how to lay tile video” that has been prepared by an expert. A good video will teach you everything that you need to know, from choosing tile to removing the plumbing fixtures to the actual cutting and installing of tile.
You should watch the video several times. After the first time, visit the home improvement store
and tour the tile aisle. The tools and supplies should look familiar to you. Start thinking about
your first project. A small bathroom floor or a small countertop make great first projects.
Observe the location for your first project and make notes of any problem areas. Do you need to go
around a corner? Are there cutouts that need to be made for plumbing fixtures? Then watch the video
a second time and pay attention to the instructions for dealing with these issues.
After you feel confident that you understand what you are getting yourself into, buy your tile,
supplies, tools (rent a wetsaw) and get started. You may need to refer back to the video a few
times during the project.
When you are finished, step back and admire your hard work. Then think
about how much money you just saved. The cost of the video is far less than the cost of hiring
someone to lay the ceramic tile for you. I think that you will find that watching a video makes
tiling a lot easier to accomplish than simply reading an article and looking a a few pictures.
