Do you remember having seen on TV dramatic video clips showing offenders involved in crime caught on record at a certain place and time?
Investigating authorities find this kind of information invaluable not only for solving mysterious criminal cases but also for nailing suspects to their responsibilities in court.
More and more surveillance cameras are installed in public places exactly for providing increased security by discouraging dangerous people from committing misdeeds.
This tendency is loudly opposed by those who see too much control as a direct threat to people s freedom inasmuch as the authorities themselves are not subject to public supervision.
When dealing with planning and installing a Home Surveillance system though, one would not dare to think of preparing to document criminal occurrences of tragic events at home.
The planned security system is intended more for deterring potential burglars from performing their petty theft or vandalic actions than for video recording the details of unpleasant events.
Anyhow the chances to recover stolen goods are usually minimal, except if the thief is a supposed trustworthy known person.
A few types of video recorders are available for a Home Surveillance System.
The simplest and widely available Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) is probably found in almost every family, and it could be used successfully for surveillance video recording.
One annoying limitation of this device though is the need to change cassette quite frequently, more often than required for unattended operation. To avoid this hindrance one could operate the VCR only upon movement detection by a suitable sensor, if the place is normally quiet.
Special time-lapse recorders are built to be programmed for intermittent operation at a selected time schedule. Better use is made of recordable tape length so that tape change is needed only at longer intervals.
More modern, complex and expensive programmable digital instruments are now available, capable of exceptional performance. This technology allows file compression, resulting in long hours of continuous recording in computer type
memories.
Whatever type is selected, depending on the main requirements for the application, a suitable video recorder is an essential part of well conceived and built Home Surveillance System.
