High Utility Bills Lowered

High Utility Bills Lowered
By Everett Ramsey

If you are concerned about increased utility bill cost, you are not alone. With the expectation of continually higher prices for electricity for summer cooling and higher gas prices for winter heating, we all shiver to think of our future utility bills.

There is much you can do to curb this utility hog from eating too far into your precious funds. Today we will talk about heating and cooling equipment and air duct design.

Even if you do not want to spend a lot of money, you can do several things to help here. It is no secret that more than half the population is paying excessive utility bills due to equipment and duct design deficiencies.

Don t blame the manufacturers. Large firms like Train, Carrier, Goodman and others have done their homework. They have spent millions of dollars to design the most efficient heating and cooling equipment in the world. The problem is not with them.

Instead, the problem is with the contractors and installers who convince the consumer to take short cuts that are cheaper for the contractor or installer when installing and not necessarily for the customer..

If your equipment is over 10 years old, you need new equipment. Efficiency has improved tremendously over the past ten years. Air conditioners are rated for efficiency by “SEER” meaning “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio” Kind of like “miles per gallon” on your car. “Tons” is the term to describe the capacity of the air conditioner. Sort of like “horsepower” in your car engine.

Just remember that if your air conditioner is more than ten years old it has a SEER ratio of 10 or less. The newer systems by law have to have 13 SEER. Most companies make SEER rated equipment all the way up to 16 or 20 SEER. Yes, you pay more up front for higher SEER, but you pay much less for utilities to run them.

The same is true with your gas furnace. The standard efficiency is 80% or less. That means that for every dollar of gas you burn, you only get 80 cents worth of heat of less.. The newer models are available in 92%, 93% and 95% efficiency.

Now the sad thing is that house construction, lack of proper heat load calculations and poor duct design can destroy all the efficiency you bought in your new equipment.
