Choosing a Good Set of Screw Drivers
By Rodney Whittle

When purchasing screw drivers, look for tempered steel shafts and good grips. Most screw drivers can be magnetized as well by drawing the shaft across a magnet, so keep a magnet handy. Magnetizing your screw driver will allow it to hold small screws for when you cannot reach to a tight area to hold the screw with your other hand.

A variety of sizes will allow you to work in limited spaces. Do note that screw drivers come in several sizes both in length and in the size of the head whether it is a Phillips or flat head screw driver. Using the incorrect head size can ruin a screw, especially one made of a soft type of metal. Be sure and use a flat head screw driver that has the same width as the screw also. You can even find offset screw drivers that allow you to take a horizontal approach to driving screws, this type of screw driver is held with a horizontal grip and typically has a flat head turned down in one direction and a Phillips turned up on the other end. You might also consider having a set of screw drivers with square sided shanks. This will allow you to use a pair of pliers of vise grips to help you turn the screw driver when you need extra leverage.

Never use your screw drivers as chisels or cutting tools. A hammer and a screw driver were never intended to be used together. Besides the obvious safety concern, you can also chip the head of your screw driver which will render it useless. Buying the right tools for those jobs that require chiseling or some kind of blunt force will save you lots of money in busted handles and using the right tools will spare you from injury. A few other things should be kept in mind for safety as well. Always cut off the power supply to anything electrical that you approach with a screw driver. Make sure that the handle of your screw driver is dry and free of grease or any other slippery substance. If a screw driver is cracked, chipped or bent throw it away. Someone else may attempt to use the tool that is not aware of it s condition.

Finally, for ease of use and convenience, keep several sets of screw drivers around your home, in your car or in a shop. Organize your tools in such a way that you can quickly choose the right size and you know where to look. Remember, the few extra seconds you take to put it back in the right place will save you minutes and maybe hours in finding it the next time.
