Benefits Of And Caring For Copper Sinks
By William Mannix Marketing

Copper sinks are made, obviously, of metal. Copper itself is a non-porous material and it won t stain. Instead, the copper in the sinks will develop a patina, or a chemical change that affects color. Most copper finishes are accelerated patinas for a deep and rich look.

There are also several benefits to having copper sinks. Copper metal is more sanitary than most other sink materials. Copper is a natural antibacterial product science has shown bacteria living for days on a stainless steel surface, but the same bateria only lasts a matter of hours on copper. For those of us concerned about having things look clean, but that also are bacteria free, a copper sink is a big plus.

There is not a whole lot to caring for a copper sink. One might think that the sink would be a pain to keep clean all fo the time. However, for a basic cleaning, simply use mild soap and water. You don t need to use the strong stuff. If your area is prone to hard water, keep your sink dry by wiping it down periodically with a soft cloth, and for extra protection, there is a product called “Renaissance Wax” that may be applied to the copper surface periodically. This will help maintain the rich luster of the copper and provide better water runoff.

For copper sinks with a black, brown or aged copper finish, use just soap and water. Be careful with toothpaste on these surfaces. Remove the toothpaste residue to avoid deterioration to the patina. If an acidic product does remove some of the patina, it will return over time.

For natural copper finishes, also use just soap and water. Over time, these sinks will get a naturally medium patina and will look even more beautiful. If you want you can periodically wax the bowl with Renaissance Wax to keep it shiny and new looking.

When cleaning your copper sinks, don t use chlorine or vinegar, abrasive cleaners, or citric acids like orange juice, or any harsh cleaning chemicals. These products could remove the patina finish. if it does happen, the patina will return naturally as time goes on.
