Feng shui has become something of a buzzword these days. But with well over three million websites (according to Google) devoted to this ancient Chinese art, it does seem likely that there s something to it.
Roughly put, the general idea is to arrange objects, such as the furniture and accessories in a room, in certain patterns of yin and yang in order to create harmony within the space and maximize the positive flow of energy or chi.
But if something as simple as where you place a chair can have such a strong effect, what impact might be made by the chair itself?
Consider, for example, those ubiquitous little French caf chairs that have virtually defined the Parisian caf for the last hundred years. How can we not see them still as reminders of the artists and writers who sat in them hour after hour, exchanging ideas that profoundly influenced the literary and artistic expression of the twentieth century.
Why, it s a wonder we don t feel compelled to reach for pen or paintbrush the moment we sit down in one of them. It s as if Hemingway had just stepped away for moment to chat with his friend F. Scott at the next table and has allowed us to take his seat for a moment.
