Pavers for a Better Outdoor Living Area

Pavers for a Better Outdoor Living Area

By: Chris Lontok

Functionality and aesthetics are important factors to consider when building outdoor living spaces. Finding the right material that marries these two factors is the key to having that perfect outdoor living space for your home. Building or rebuilding your driveway, patios, and pool decks shouldn’t be an ordeal if your know what to look for.

Interior designers and contractors are expected to present a list of choices for materials to be used for your outdoor flooring. Among the staple in the list are concrete pavers, brick pavers, interlocking pavers, and cobble stones.

Contractors have been using concrete for outdoor floorings for quite some time now. Intricate walkways, garden paths, patios, driveways, and pool decks have been designed, with concrete as its base element. Concrete pavers have increasingly gained popularity among builders in the US because it is readily available and is the cheapest among all other floor materials. It is also relatively easier to manage than, say, marble or tile. Furthermore, decorative concrete pavers now come in numerous colors and styles that can cater to almost any design aesthetic—from retro to modern; from minimalist to eccentric. You can have it stained, textured, and stamped so it suits whatever aesthetics you have planned.

Stamped concrete pavers are perfect patios and outdoor counter tops on the pool deck. You can add grills and a dining table to complete the space. If you still have a few dollars left, you can opt to buy a waterproof rug to top off the look of your outdoor living room. The outdoor floor should encase the overall scheme of the area. You can choose from plain and solid colored concrete, to stained or stamped designs.

Another alternative for your outdoor space’s flooring is the use of interlocking pavers. These pavers are look like non-rectangular bricks. But instead of grout, sand is used to lock these pavers together. This type of flooring can effectively absorb light to medium shocks from earthquakes and slight ground erosion so they are less likely to crack. Many parks in metropolitan cities are paved with these interlocking surfaces because they have a European feel to them. Commercial contractors are even asked to lay entire city blocks with this type of pavement. However, some people still choose brick pavers over the interlocking ones because like colored concrete, brick pavers have also evolved into various shapes, patterns, colors, and sizes.

Lounging by the pool or having a barbeque by the pool side is a family activity most Americans enjoy. Having a functional and well-designed pool deck adds to the enjoyment of such events. Choosing the material for the pool deck often depends on the surrounding landscape, dimensions of the space, traffic, maintenance, and budget. When budget is a big factor, using concrete is the way to go. It gives the deck a unique look, it is low maintenance, and it costs less than any other material from your set of options. In addition to this, concrete’s versatile character allows it to mimic the look of bricks or natural stone. If you have the freedom to allot a bit more money for your pool deck, flagstones are a clean yet stylish option for the material.

Contribute Towards A Green Future by Fitting uPVC Windows

Contribute Towards A Green Future by Fitting uPVC Windows

By: Chris Coxon

Given the huge demand for fuel and power, energy rates are expected to surge in the near future. To save on energy expenses, there is a significant push towards deploying green methods in building construction. Fitting uPVC windows is one of the methods for curbing energy consumption. These windows are specially manufactured to enhance the thermal properties of the building without reducing the solar light passing through the windows. However, in order to buy good quality uPVC windows and to fit them properly into the building structure, it is essential to gain some knowledge of window insulation systems.

Fitting uPVC Windows: Essential Considerations

Prior to fitting uPVC windows, it is essential to test their thermal insulation properties. The insulation testing standards used for windows are different from those used for general building material. Usually, the resistance of a material against heat loss is defined by its R-value. This value is considered as the benchmark in determining the insulation properties of building materials used to construct walls and roofs. However, it is not the perfect standard to judge the insulation properties of materials used in the construction of windows. This is due to the fact that unlike walls and roofs, windows have to allow solar light to pass through them to ensure energy conservation. Thus, for windows, one should consider the U-value as the standard unit to test thermal characteristics. It measures the rate of transfer of heat from a solid material. Thus, while buying a uPVC window, look for a high R-value and a low U-value.

Other properties that help in the selection of energy-efficient uPVC windows are:

• Condensation resistance: The condensation effect in a closed environment deters thermal control. This unit determines the property of a solid material to curb the condensation process. The higher the condensation resistance, the better is the product.

• Air leakage: It is hard to search for a uPVC window product with no air leakage. Most products allow some amount of air to pass through. The market needs to be scanned for a product with minimum air passage. Use cavity closers to eliminate the possibility of air leakage after fitting windows.

• Visible transmittance: It is the property of a solid material to allow light to pass through. Unlike the U-value, it does not provide the exact rate at which light can travel through the material.

• Heat gain coefficient: It defines the property of a product to block solar heat. The lower the coefficient, the higher is the ability to block heat. To exercise high control over the temperature inside the building, use a product with a low heat gain coefficient.

Fitting uPVC Windows With Flexible Straps

Fitting uPVC windows, while preserving thermal control, is a daunting task. A bad fit can lead to cavities in the construction, which will hamper the insulation characteristics of the building. Using flexible straps is a smart solution to these problems. These straps are adjustable with different window systems and help to position the uPVC windows perfectly into the building structure. Initially, these steel straps are fixed to the outer frame of the window. The window is then placed in the cavity and adjusted. Once the window is fixed nicely, it is secured by locking the straps with interior blockwork. These straps can fix into cavities of different sizes and enhance the insulation properties of the building. Using straps also eliminates the use of screws for fixing the window.

Buying Power Tools Online Is Quick And Easy, Including Any Information Available On The Products.

Buying Power Tools Online Is Quick And Easy, Including Any Information Available On The Products.

By: Michiel Van Kets

With the cost of fuel rising worldwide, many retail customers choose to shop online as a money-saving option. This has a lot of benefits for the consumer and the environment, not to mention delivery services, such as the post office, and retailers can keep their costs down too. It is incredible what can be bought on the internet these days; cars, homes, the list goes on and on!

Websites advertising these wares provide plenty of photographs and information about each item they sell – probably more than an actual sales person could remember. There is a contact service where a potential buyer or interested viewer can ask yet more questions. Some sites even offer special discounts or free gifts with purchases. There is also the possibility of commenting on the merchandise bought, which will help other interested parties to make a decision on whether an item suits their needs and if they should get it; acquiring an item second-hand if a brand new one is too costly, even offering a ‘wish list’ if the customer is unable to make the purchase for some time; and participating in a forum for customers who want to talk to likeminded shoppers about their product choices. Visitors to these sites can elect to receive information on new products, special offers, featured items and discount codes, among other things.

On the downside of shopping this way, the customer doesn’t walk away with their purchases as soon as they pay. Depending on location, time of day of the transaction, what was purchased and payment method used, it can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks – and sometimes months. But getting a package in the mail or delivered door to door can be very exciting for some. It would be like getting a surprise and then opening the package to find that it was exactly the right thing to have!

Some things people buy, such as unusually long items, bulky or oddly shaped items, heavy or extra large items, are difficult to carry and inconvenient to transport when the shopper does not have their own vehicle. A delivery service equipped to carry such inventory is a sign of relief for any customer.

Let us take a look at power tools: every kind imaginable, every size produced, every design option available can be procured via the world wide web. Their prices, along with delivery costs, are comparable to those of retail stores – sometimes even cheaper – all without having to leave the comfort of home or taking up precious lunch-break time at work. Who would not want to shop this way, knowing that the extra money normally spent on transportation to and from the retail outlets, can be spent on more products or kept in the consumer’s pocket? All the buyer has to do at the end is accept the delivery without having to lug their purchases all the way back.

It is hard to think that anyone would need tools that are so large, but think of powered garden tools – lawn mowers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, brush-cutters, garden drills, log splitters and earth diggers – to name but a few. Most of these items are what makes up the basic gardening equipment set to maintain any private green outdoor space. And nearly all these items are tricky to transport as they may be too heavy to be carried by an individual, too bulky to store in a car or too dangerous to be handled, unpacked or assembled without the help of a professional.

When ordering power tools online, most of these virtual companies will provide the full service for their customers. So all there is to do is to pick an item or items, settle the bill, provide the required delivery information, then sit back and wait for the merchandise to turn up at the door. Quick, simple, hassle free. Shopping for tools has never been so stress free and easy!

Houston Wrought Iron - Lasting Trend Makes a Comeback

Houston Wrought Iron - Lasting Trend Makes a Comeback

By: Curtis Gonatas

While Houston wrought iron works certainly cannot compete with the Spanish-cum-Creole balconies and intricacies of New Orleans, the architectural style is making a comeback nationwide and the nations’ fourth largest city is no exception. Details such as iron railings, iron staircases, iron fences and gates and iron balconies are cropping up and lending an air of Old World charm and beauty to our oil-built landscape.

This is due largely in part to the excellent custom iron workers and iron fence companies in our area. Using iron in gates and fencing ensures a lasting material, sure to endure the humidity and wetness of Houston’s climate.

Of course, Houston wrought iron in architecture and even interior decor is not a new trend. Also known as “worked” iron, the metal itself has a long and distinguished history. There are wrought iron railings in Westminster Abbey from the thirteenth century that display all the characteristics known as ‘ornamental iron-work.’

There is certainly no Houston ornamental iron work this old, but the look is on the rise in new construction. Traditionally, leaner economic times see an increase in design revival trends. A certain yearning for “better days” gives rise to the desire to fit one’s surroundings with the trappings of “yesteryear.”

Perhaps the most well known example of Houston ornamental iron architecture is the West Galleria-area restaurant and event space, The Courtyard on St James. A perfect example of Houston wrought iron, the building is styled after the French Quarter in New Orleans and attracts a steady stream of weddings and parties, all hoping to invoke the magic of that area.

Another more recent addition to the Houston wrought iron revival is the newish Midtown middies apartments, The Calais on Courtlandt. These luxury boutique apartments also boast an air of “Nawlins” with their iron railings and balconies surrounding lushly landscaped courtyards.

Additionally, new home builders are using ornamental iron in the interior design of their houses, adding beautiful custom architectural details from decorative and security window bars to sweeping bannisters with arching, graceful lines.
